Video: By Small and Simple Things

April 18th, 2007 by Richard K Miller | Filed under Member missionary work, Videos.

If you're new here, read more about the More Good Foundation. We help members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon church) share their beliefs on the Internet. Learn more about what Mormons believe or talk with Mormons at LDS.net.

The California San Jose Mission produced a video to encourage member missionary work. It depicts a teenage girl who shares a Book of Mormon with her classmate. Her testimony, written in the front cover of the book, is first tossed aside, but later the classmate reads the Book of Mormon, prays, and is baptized along with his family.

The second half of the video includes several interviews from Church members explaining how and why they joined the Church.

To me the video brings a peaceful feeling of gratitude for the many blessings of the Restored gospel and also a reminder of the importance of sharing the gospel.

Also, if you speak Portuguese, you might like the videos Giuseppe recorded of members of his ward. Several of them shared their beliefs and testimony in a short video. If you live in Utah and would like to do this with your ward, we’d be glad to help personally. If you don’t live in Utah, maybe you can find a video camera, round up a few ward members, and post the videos online yourself. We’d love to know about it.

UPDATE: The music used in this video wasn’t properly licensed from its copyright owner, so we have removed it. You can still see watch video testimonials from members of Giuseppe’s ward.

Yeah, that’s an awesome movie…but the church actually came out with an official statement saying that the movie should not be reproduced, distributed, or seen outside of the San Jose California mission boundaries. Within the mission, too, the church issued an official ban on the movie. The reason? Copyright infringements. Elders Hall and Draper, who made the movie, didn’t obtain written permission from the people they interviewed to reproduce their testimonies (and I understand that one of the converts has become less active). Also, they used music from an Evangelical Christian album celebrating Thomas Kinkade, as well as music from the Dances with Wolves soundtrack, without permission. They never expected the movie to be a big hit outside of the mission, but within a year of its production, the movie had gone around the world, as RMs from the CSJM shared the DVD with friends. This made it necessary for the church to try and stop the proliferation of the movie, to protect it from lawsuits over copyright infringement. I know this, because I was a missionary in the California San Jose Mission from ‘03 to ‘05, and I was actually there whent the DVD was first produced and distributed to us missionaries for use in proselyting and member work. It’s an excellent movie, and I’ve seen it bring about miracles, but the church has issued an official statement against its distribution. Just so you know.

The North Carolina Charlotte Mission made one as well, with the same title. It was produced in late 2004 and is excellent. I don’t know the copyright or distribution status of it, though.

Onelowerlight: Thanks for letting us know the status of the movie. It fell into our lap, but I had no information on its background or copyright status.

By the way, I’ve been subscribed to your blog for a few weeks and really like your photos.

Keri: Do you have a copy of the NC mission video?

    Thanks! No problem.

Yes. I have a copy of the NC video. I did a quick scan of the insert, and it contains instructions to the missionaries on effective use of the film, but it contains no copyright information.

My son is serving a mission in Colombia and would like to have the video By Small and Simple Things to share with his investigators. They have used them in his mission but they are all gone and he would like one for his own. Is it possible to buy them and do they come with Spanish sub-titles? Thank-you Lisa

Lisa: As far as I know, that movie was never for sale, nor is it supposed to be distributed because it contains copyrighted music that was used without permission.

why does a good thing have to be attacked?! so what copyright laws. why do people really care? intended for a good cause don’t you think? no matter what views you may feel. kinda shallow minded that art and love can’t be shared without and arguement, but i guess we have all have to fight for what we love anyways. i think it’s a great powerful video no matter your faith. it’s good to see people that feel so strong about their life don’t you think? is it that hard to be a good person to feel something as innocent as people sharing their faith with really good music to go along with their power of conviction? thanks to hall, draper, kincade and the singer of waterfall, i mean what a great callboration of art and conviction?!!!

Does anybody know which one of President Eyring’s talk that’s on the video?

  13. Richard | 7/07/08

KH: I believe this is President Eyring’s talk “A Child and a Disciple,” from April 2003 General Conference:
