This spring PBS will air a 4-hour special on “The Mormons”. Award-winning filmmaker Helen Whitney spent 3 years creating this program, “interviewing ‘hundreds and hundreds of people’ ranging from LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley to everyday church members to those who are openly antagonistic toward the church.” She hopes it will dispel a variety of stereotypes and misconceptions about the Mormon church.

I was heart sick and angry. So many half truths. Our Beloved Joseph made to look like a liar, a sex fiend, a false prophet who wanted to establish his own kingdom for his own glory. Which makes the rest of us look like deceived imbicils for following him. The impression left was that we have mandatory tithing, and missions, harsh and unloving ex communications, pressures on women to be Molly Mormon, authoritarian priesthood, zero tolerance for intellectuals and Gays, bigotry towards Blacks and are still polygamists at heart. How does this help dispel misconceptions about us. The one thing it may have done is make us go to the scriptures and prepare to defend ourselves.
